We have been using one of this style fire pits for quite a while and I think they could benefit with a bit more ventilation along the bottom. Having a hot plate for the top is pretty much essential but we also added a tripod for holding a camp oven and a battery powered rotisserie and with all those extras it has turned out to be very versatile. As you mentioned, a tray to collect ashes is great too, I had something in the shed that did the job perfectly. I like the folding charcoal lighter, we have the round one and yup, they take up a lot of room. Mind you, I paid just $4 for it from an op-shop so I can't complain too much :) We tend to fill up the charcoal lighter which is really far too much but it lasts for ages and is great on a cold night. If I am using the charcoal lighter I just put a couple of firelighter blocks underneath. By the time the charcoal lights the stinky smell of the lighters is gone. Wait until the charcoal starts to have a powdery grey look before you put it in to the fire pit. Usually takes about 30 minutes. I have used a butane torch to light the charcoal directly in the fire pit a couple of times but that can be a bit dodgy. I'll have to get one of those digital thermometers, that would be great for knowing when to chuck the steaks on. I originally wondered if the plates on the fire pit would warp but ours hasn't so far.

Thanks for your feedback. Ive seen those rotisserie things but not something I would probaly use. If I was to use a camp oven I would get one of those hanging things to. My charcol had that powdery grey look but only the few on the bottom. Next time I think ill wait till its all going and see what happens.

      John
I thought about getting one, how long does it take to cool down?

@@kevinwylde4737 haha I went out at 6pm and it was still warm. But that was because of the charcoal . I would thing with just wood it might be quicker. But if camping and wonting to move on I guess you could just throw water onto it.

I just replaced one of these firepits because it really struggled for oxygen which makes them smoke badly, you can cut holes but then you have to contend with the ash, I've replaced it with a stainless steel folding pit they work much better and burn cleaner with less smoke due to the air gaps between the quadrants allowing better combustion and the base protects the ground from ash, I picked mine up on Amazon the Campingmoon brand MT-055 with the grille that's almost identical specs to the $350 Darche unit for half its price delivered, only had a chance to test it out at home but so far its a lot better than the previous kings pit.

I know what you mean about the lack of air. I thought to at first look at it that this would be a problem. But as you can see in the video it burned ok and I dont recall it smoking. I've only used it twice now with the same result. I wonder if the type of material your burning could make a difference. Just a thought. Its always good to find something that's cheap and works as good as the expensive ones. Good luck with the new one. Happy cooking and thanks for watching.
